A Rough Guide To Japanese Cuisine

Here are some Japanese dishes for you to try. They range from food not disimilar to Western dishes to those that will appeal to the more adventurous diner.

Korroke (Croquets) - Deep fried balls of mashed potato with fish, meat or vegetables.

Tempura - Deep-fried vegetables, seafood, and meat in a light batter.

Karaage - Bite sized pieces of chicken or fish floured and deep fried.

Gyudon - Hot steamed rice topped with seasoned beef.

Unadon - Hot steamed rice topped with broiled eel and vegetables

Kushiyaki - Skewers of meat and vegetables.

Okonomiyaki - Savoury pancakes filled with meat or vegetables.

Yakitori - Barbequed chicken skewers.

Teriyaki - grilled, broiled, or pan-fried meat, fish, chicken or vegetables glazed with a sweetened soy sauce.

Unagi - Grilled and flavoured eel.

Yakizakana - Flame grilled fish that is usually served with grated daikon (white radish). One of the most common Japanese dishes.

Shabu Shabu - Hot pot with sliced beef, tofu and vegetables cooked in a thin stock at the table.

Sukiyaki - Thinly sliced beef and vegetables cooked in a mixture of soy sauce, dashi, sugar and sake.

Onigiri - Balls of rice with a filling in the middle
